FEVER PITCH assesses the cult of fan culture surrounding pop divas Victoria and David Beckham, Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue, Grace Jones and Diana Ross. With a chapter reserved for each (two for Minogue), Nordeen explores the appeal that inspires such cultish adoration in these icons' fanbase. With the refreshing candor of a self-proclaimed fan, Nordeen uses psychoanalysis, post-colonial theory, film theory and pop culture jargon to assess the psychological draw and sense of community such figures engender.
Nordeen examines his exhaustive replay of Houston's 'I Will Always Love You' and analyzes the tune's structure, its dependence on The Bodyguard narrative and its stoic emotionality. Grace Jones traipses "from reverence to rape in a single note," while the Posh and Becks issue of W is likely their "highest moment of command over the American pop market." In Minogue, he sees a figure who crafts a generic facade as a promise for all of those lovely sensations which lie in the Lacanian realm of pre-symbolism.
